Dog owners can relate to the adorable and heart-wrenching look our furry friends give us when we’re about to leave. Liam Burns experienced this firsthand when his golden retriever, Basil, couldn’t accept being left behind. In a viral video, Basil wedged himself in the doorway, gazing at his owner with eyes full of longing, begging him not to go.
While Basil knows how to make his owners feel guilty, once they leave, he usually settles down and remains calm. However, it’s important for dog owners to understand their pets’ needs and not leave them alone for extended periods of time. The American Kennel Club recommends avoiding leaving a dog alone for more than six to eight hours a day, suggesting alternatives like a dog walker or daycare.
To help puppies feel comfortable alone, creating a safe area such as a pen or crate, along with positive associations, can make a difference. Leaving toys or treats can also keep them occupied. Owners should gradually increase the time left alone and monitor their dog’s behavior for signs of separation anxiety, such as excessive barking, destructive behavior, or attempts to escape.
